Inside The Thyssen Studio

Every piece of jewellery created in our workshops is thought through in design and functionality. Sometimes, it is a commissioned piece, fitting the aspirations and wishes of a client. On other occasions we let our creativity run free, designing pieces from our own inspiration.

This week, Ortwin has been busy in the studio working on a new design for a one-off engagement ring, the centrepiece of which will be a beautiful Baguette Cut Diamond.

Working out a design for something as intricate as an engagement ring involves focussing on very small, subtle curves and lines, while the aesthetics of the design are brought into harmony with the engineering from claw layout and finger-size, to leaving space for a future wedding band.

Surrounding himself with precious stones, paper and watercolours, Ortwin sketches, paints, details and iterates – letting the design take shape and leaving a trail of creative chaos behind.

Of course, this is just the starting point. Every Thyssen piece comes to life in the making at the bench…
